The Dance Movement (TDM) was established in 1999 as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee with charitable objectives. For the first 7 years the company toured dance performances nationally with funding from Arts Council England and produced successful educational projects. In 2004, upon invitation from Farnham Maltings, TDM relocated to Surrey to become a resident company. Whilst continuing to tour the Company began researching the community dance needs of Farnham. With support from Farnham Maltings the TDM entered a phase of transition and Rachel Palmer was appointed Programme Director to persue a new vision.
Rachel began to develop a thriving dance communtiy in Farnham acheieved by presenting professional dance companies at venues in Farnham including: Bedlam Dance, Rannel, Banxsy and Curtis James. She created a much needed dance development programme for dance artists titled INTERACTION in partnership with Surrey Arts Dance. In addition Rachel began creating Site-Responsive performances with a team of sound, film and visual artists with whom she still collaborates today.
With all the activity going on TDM appointed a Company Administrator to support the education work and appointed a larger Board of Directors to support the new frame work. In 2011 The Dance Movement were delighted to announce the Rt. Hon Jeremy Hunt MP became Company Patron. To date the company goes from strength to strength, 2012 saw Rachel working with Charlie Morrissey on Tree of Light as a choreographer, and South East Dance commissioned a new outdoor solo POLESTAR as part of Big Dance South East England 2012. This work was develoepd and toured around Surrey in parks, and old people's homes. TDM are due to start working with GLive on their new production The Birth of Stars in March 2013.
