Dance and arts project supports young carers

19 March 2018

A multi-media arts project from community dance organisation The Dance Movement, is supporting young carers in Surrey by helping them to tell their stories through arts, crafts and performance.

Wise Words is a creative project designed by Nicky Norton from The Dance Movement and is especially for young carers. The next Wise Words project takes place on 28 March, 4, 5 and 24 April at Farnham Maltings and is free for young carers to join.

Rachel Deadman, Artistic Director at The Dance Movement is encouraging young carers to sign up to the Easter project: “If you are a young carer, we would love for you to come to our taster session on 28 March and even sign up to our project days. Wise Words is a fun dance and arts workshop. We would like to help you explore and share your experiences as a carer by creating something special with us. It could be a giant mural, a dance or a sculpture - it’s totally up to you! We will provide all the help you need. What you create could even help another young carer with their own challenges. If you love to act, draw, dance, craft, paint, talk or create, please come along!”

At the end of the project, there will be an exhibition at the Farnham Maltings of all the young people’s creations to share their insights into being a young carer. The Dance Movement and the project funders are keen to make sure that any young carer who wants to take part is able to do so, and can help with transport to the sessions if needed.

At the taster session, which is from 6 to 8pm on 28 March at Farnham Maltings, participants will get an idea of what the project will be like and have the chance to try out some art, craft and performance skills. They can also meet the people running the project sessions, including Nicky Norton who is leading the project and is a dance, drama and art specialist; dancer Emma Swinden and documentary film-maker Gav Hoare. To register or book on the whole project, contact Nicky via or 07931 730102.

Rachel Deadman explains why Wise Words is important for Surrey: “Young carers are among the most vulnerable people in our community and yet they provide amazing support to their families - and indirectly to wider society - by caring for and carrying out practical tasks that public and health services might otherwise be required to do. With Wise Words, we are providing opportunities to young carers to experience the positive outcomes of dance: physical activity, free expression, building confidence and collaborating with others to name just a few.”

The Dance Movement hopes that through projects like Wise Words, it can give much needed support and recognition to young carers and protect their wellbeing, potentially even reducing pressure on public services.

Wise Words is funded by Farnham Maltings, Action for Carers and the Community Foundation for Surrey and is completely free for young carers to attend. The Dance Movement is a not for profit dance company that aims to help people connect through dance. As well as providing dance classes and putting on professional dance performances, it runs a number of projects to support the Farnham and Surrey community through dance and creative projects.
